Secret Warriors Vol 3 Wake the Beast Jonathan Hickman Stefano Caselli Gianluca Gugliotta Books
Jonathan Hickman's Secret Warriors is one of the most underrated Marvel titles from the last few years. This third volume continues his story arc of the shadow war between Nick Fury's SHIELD remnants (scattered by Norman Osborn's Dark Reign) and a renewed Hydra. However, with the previous volume's revelations that a third group, Leviathan, has entered the fray the three groups are on a collision course. What makes Hickman's run so strong is not only the character development spent on Nick, his agents, and Daisy Johnson's titular team of up and coming super heroes, but the attention to the heads of Hydra as well. Hickman is clearly to thank for some great work on characters like the Gorgon, the Hive, and Baron Strucker. It is no surprise the Agents of SHIELD TV show clearly takes so many cues from this series as it is a great spy thriller mixed with a bombastic super hero book. Stefano Caselli draws this volume (he trades off work with Volume Two's Alessandro Vitti) and provides the strongest art for this series in my opinion.Tags : Amazon.com: Secret Warriors, Vol. 3: Wake the Beast (9780785147572): Jonathan Hickman, Stefano Caselli, Gianluca Gugliotta: Books,Jonathan Hickman, Stefano Caselli, Gianluca Gugliotta,Secret Warriors, Vol. 3: Wake the Beast,Marvel,0785147578,Superheroes,Comic books, strips, etc.,Fury, Nick (Fictitious character),Graphic novels,Science fiction comic books, strips, etc,Superhero comic books, strips, etc,COMICS & GRAPHIC NOVELS Superheroes (see also FICTION Superheroes),Comic books, strips, etc,Comics & Graphic Novels,Fiction,Graphic novels: superheroes & super-villains,Monograph Series, any,TEEN'S GRAPHIC WORKS SUPER HEROES,United States
Secret Warriors Vol 3 Wake the Beast Jonathan Hickman Stefano Caselli Gianluca Gugliotta Books Reviews
This third volume of Secret Warriors marks the halfway point of the series, but Jonathan Hickman just begins to ramp up the excitement. At the end of volume one, Nick Fury gave Dum Dum Dugan an ultimatum "You have one month to make me an army." At the start of this collection, that month has passed, and Dugan has delivered. As Fury and his troops prepare to go to war with Hydra, a new faction enters the conflict. Leviathan, a top-secret group created by the Soviet Union during the cold war has re-emerged from a deep sleep, and they have no love for either Fury or Hydra. This is the most thrilling chapter of Secret Warriors so far. Hickman crafts a masterful spy story with twists in every chapter that you never see coming! Here's a sample (in no particular order)
Hydra has a double agent
Fury has two more black ops teams besides the Howling Commandos and the Secret Warriors
Romance on the team
A member of Hydra's inner circle is killed
Someone gets cut from Fury's team
Fury has a traitor in his midst
Someone in Hydra's inner circle is not who they claim to be
That's all I'll tease, since I don't want to spoil the story. The only other thing I'll say is that Stefano Caselli returns as artist on this arc ( with an assist from Gianluca Gugliotta). This whole series is a must own, but this third arc; Wake the Beast, is incredibly good!
I don't know where this espionage series is going but I'm liking how it's getting there, especially the layered inks and art by Allesandro Viitti. In this collection Leviathan is revealed to be Cold War Russia's version of the secret Soviet State primed to make a comeback. Their at odds with a lot of people, including Hydra as it currently stands, and those organizations come into sharp conflict. Nick Fury is keeping tabs, of course, but he's not doing much other in these pages except for developing response teams. So the bad guys are the real stars of this book, and their back stories and duplicities and double-crosses intrigue.
Starring Viper, Baron von Strucker, Kraken, Madame Hydra, and Gorgon.
This is a great series that should be made into an omnibus great actions charitors and plot twists. Nick Fury great super spy, can't wait too see what happens next!!!Secret Warriors - Volume 3 Wake the Beast
Great story.
Hickman is amazing with this kind of deep material. He is a modern master storyteller.
