Unlike the author’s other stories, this one doesn’t follow one character, but five, while told in the third person POV. Nina owns a landscape design business. Cindy owns a cleaning/organizing service. Both are hired by Deacon Whitney to restore the house and gardens of Crane’s Nest, a family home on Whitney Island that had been abandoned generations ago due to loss of life and funds. The house is said to be haunted and the family cursed.Deacon Whitney made a fortune creating his own social networking site and is the inheritor of the house. His cousin Dotty shows up as she wants to write a book about the history of the house and the tragedy that occurred, and Deacon’s best friend Jake, who is working with the plans, all plan to spend the summer together on the island with Nina and Cindy to get everything done. Yes, there are ghosts, making the story a little more interesting.
What the author is best at is likeable, fun characters, interesting relationships and quirky situations, and this one doesn’t disappoint. But for me all of her books are a slow, even paced read as we learn different things about the characters and slowly unfold information for the mystery; sometimes to the point of almost dragging.
If you enjoyed her other books, than you’ll most likely like this one as well. I liked the conclusion to the mystery; keep some tissues handy.

Better Homes and Hauntings by Molly Harper is a cute paranormal romance novel. Nina Linden is a landscape architect and owns Demeter Designs. Nina has been chosen by Deacon Whitney to do the landscaping on his rundown family mansion Crane's Nest on Whitney Island. It is over a hundred years old and no one has lived in it since the original mistress, Catherine Whitney died. There have been supernatural sightings for many years and the mansion is believed to be haunted.
Deacon has also hired Cindy Ellis of Cinderella Cleaning Service to clean up the house and organize it as well as Jake Rumson is Deacon's friend and also the architect on the project. Nina, Jake, and Cindy along with Deacon will be the only people staying full-time on the island. Well, they were supposed to be the only people staying until Dotty, Deacon's cousin, shows up. Dotty wants to write a book about the history of the house, family, and fixing up of the house.
As soon as they hit the island, Nina sees a shadowy figure on the widow walk of the house. As they spend more time on the island, they all start to feel the spirits. Nina and Deacon are each having dreams. Nina is seeing things through Catherine's point of view and Deacon is seeing the same events through a gentleman's point of view. They are not sure if the man is Catherine's husband, Gerald or Jack, the man presumed to be her lover. Dotty wants to find out what really happened to Catherine. Who killed her and did she really have an affair with Jack.
Nina is hoping to get away from her former partner, Rick Douglas. He has been stalking her, running up credit card debt in her name, and destroying her work sites. As Deacon and Nina get closer, Deacon is determined to keep Nina safe.
The story can be a wee bit confusing at times. It is not just told from one point of view. It rotates between the main characters. You can be reading about Cindy and then it switches to Jack, then to Dotty, and so on. Better Homes and Hauntings, though, is a charming story. It has romance, mystery, and paranormal activity. It is a good book, but not as good as Molly Harper's vampire books (they are wonderful)! I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I am a Molly Harper fan. Yes, Ms. Harper, I read you like candy. I've loved the Half Moon Hollow books and was excited to ready something outside that universe and Better Homes and Hauntings filled the bill.
The characters were all fleshed out, realistic, likable people living in a well-plotted universe. I have always loved the wit and snark in Ms. Harper's books and this one was no exception, providing several laugh-out-loud moments. There were also some great, gruesome scares along the way.
I have to admit, I knew what the twist was about half-way through, but it didn't matter; I was interested in seeing how things would resolve for the characters. I would highly recommend the book and can truthfully state that I enjoyed everything about it--with one exception the word "dang."
I've gotten used to that particular word, when used by certain characters in the Half-Moon Hollow universe, but this book was set on an island off the coast of Newport, RI. I live in the Northeast. As a NYCG I can tell you that "dang" is not in a New Yorker's vocabulary, or a New Englander's vocabulary, either. That word just tends to pull me out of the narrative every time. It may be a reasonable colloquialism in a Kentucky setting, but I found it jarring in a Rhode Island setting. As a fellow writer, if you can't use "damn," may I suggest "darn" or "for heaven's sake" or "unbelievable," but not "dang." I'm just saying. But dang it, even so, I managed to love the book. Keep up the good, snarky work and I promise to keep buying the books!
